Course Description

This Page is designated for Mr. Braam's 2017-18 CCR English 10 classes. It contains primarily downloadable files of homework and presentations given in class.
This is for students who either were absent, forgot their HW at school, or else wanted a review opportunity with a presentation, such as PowerPoints.

Late Work, Final Notice

As a final reminder (I have been alerting classes for a week), the end of the quarter is coming up on Friday. Therefore, I need to have any and all late work turned in no later than end of day, Wednesday, Nov. 1, to give me time to grade the work.
As usual, late work -- in general -- receives partial credit, except in extenuating circumstances, such as, for example, extended illnesses.

Peer Edit Personal Narrative 2017-18

Attached is a peer editing form for the personal narratives we are writing.. They were passed out, discussed and utilized in class on Monday, Oct. 30, 2017.
Students were to exchange narratives with another student, read each other's stories, then fill out these forms entirely. They were then to discuss with each other things that they may want to change.
Then, at that time (or later), students are to actually make desired changes in their work.
Students eventually will be required to have two peer edits done by different people. They will attach the completed peer edits to their final drafts, and they will be worth 6 points apiece.

Hooks Rewrite Examples, Plus HW

Attached is a list of examples of rewritten narrative Hooks and Ledes (and, yes, "ledes" is purposefully spelled that way ... it's an old journalism habit!!!) and a homework/classwork assignment.
The examples were distributed and discussed in class on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, in conjunction with a PowerPoint and a list of hook styles. Both are also posted.
Students are to examine the various ways that my story's introduction was rewritten, then to rewrite the introduction//hooks to their own personal narratives in four different styles.
There also will be some time (not all) of Friday's class to work on the assignment. It is due at the end of the bell on Friday.

Types of Hooks and Ledes Handout

Attached is a list of narrative Hooks and Ledes (and, yes, "ledes" is purposefully spelled that way ... it's an old journalism habit!!!)
The list was distributed and discussed in class on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, in conjunction with a PowerPoint and a homework assignment. Both are also posted.

Hooks and Ledes Powerpoint

Attached is a PowerPoint on narrative Hooks and Ledes (and, yes, "ledes" is purposefully spelled that way ... it's an old journalism habit!!!)
The PowerPoint was watched and discussed in class on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017, in conjunction with two other handouts (a list of Hooks and Ledes styles and a homework assignment). Both are also posted.

Planning Sheet: Sensory Details Chart

Attached is a planning sheet for including sensory details in the personal narratives. It was distributed and discussed in class on Wed., Oct. 25, 2017. It needs to be completed and turned in with the eventual final draft, along with the Timeline and 5Ws planning sheets.

Review: Figurative Speech, Sensory Details, Vivid Verbs

Attached is a series of review sheets on Figurative Language, Sensory Details, and Vivid Verbs. They are to be referred to in conjunction with writing the personal narratives. (All three are required elements; figurative language presents two opportunities for extra credit.)
I suggest that this packet be kept for the entire year, as we will frequently use these topics.

Personal Narrative Scoresheet-Rubric

Attached is the scoresheet and rubric for writing the personal narrative. It was passed out and discussed on Monday, Oct. 23 (my apologies that it has not been posted earlier, but I have been sick with vertigo and forgot to post it that day).
The first rough draft is due at the start of the bell on Thursday, Oct. 26. It should be printed out. It can be printed Wednesday in class, before or after school in the Media Center, or at home.

5Ws for personal narrative planning

Attached is a "%Ws and an H" planning guide to help students plan their personal narratives. They were made available in class and discussed on Friday, Oct. 20, to be worked on once students had an approved topic.
Students were warned not write the entire story here, merely to list the major events.
They were also told that if they could not answer the questions, then maybe they might not be able to use that topic to write about (since they did not remember the incident well enough). In truth, about 15 students changed topics after they realized they did not remember enough about the event
Students were to have this 5Ws finished by Monday, Oct. 23, along with a timeline planner, in order to begin writing the rough draft Monday in class.

Personal Narrative Timeline Organizer

Attached is a Timeline Organizer to help students plan their personal narratives. They were made available in class and discussed on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, and -- if students had an approved topic -- they were to begin listing events as they happened in the story they are going to write. at latest, students were to have picked up and began working on the timeline by Friday.
Students were warned not write the entire story here, merely to list the major events.
They were also told that if they could not come up with just 12 items to go into a timeline, then maybe they might not be able to use that topic to write about (since they did not remember the incident well enough).
Students were to have this timeline finished by Monday, Oct. 23, along with another planner, in order to begin writing the rough draft Monday in class.

Planning guides for personal narrative

Attached is a planning guide for our personal narratives. The planning guide was distributed and discussed in class and worked on on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2017, in order to help pick a topic
Students were to look at the planning guide, refer back to our notes as to what goes into a personal narrative, look at several earlier assignments and notes, and then turn in three topics and descriptions that they might write about.
Students then held one-on-one conferences with me to determine which topic they would write about.
Though most students handed in and discussed the index cards on Thursday, they were not due until the start of class Friday.

Personal Narrative Topics Index Card

Attached are instructions for how to create an index card with three possible topics for our personal narratives. The instructions were distributed in class and worked on on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2017.

Tuesday, Oct, 17, 2017

On Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2017, we first created a list of what things have to be in a personal narrative. We then brainstormed to come up with ideas of things that we can talk/write about in our lives without any difficulty. This list is important, because we will go back to it from time to time and choose fresh topics to write about.
No specific homework for tonight, except to catch up on anything that is late, or to create the list discussed above if absent.
