Independent and Dependent Clauses PDF

Attached is a PDF version of a SmartBoard presentation about Independent and Dependent Clauses. It is not quite the same as seeing and discussing it in class, but it at least has the basics of what we did in class on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 27-28.
Students took notes, took several mini-quizzes, and practiced making dependent clause/fragments into complete independent clauses/sentences.
All work was completed in class.

Students, working with partners, started on the first day by writing in the boxes what they thought the definitions and examples are.

What Happened Monday!!! Looking to Future

Greetings!
There is no specific HW from today's class.
We took a Parts of Speech Pre-Test Monday, Sept. 25, 2017, to see how much we would have to review the concept (it seems we will have to review a lot).
On Tuesday, we will be going over Parts of Speech during class.
NOTE: Your child will need to have the required binder on Wednesday to take notes (previous notes have been on handouts(. The binder will be coming to class regularly for a while. IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD A BINDER(S) AND/OR PAPER, SEE MR. BRAAM BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL SO HE CAN HELP YOU GET ONE.

"Rambling Autobiography"

Attached is "Rambling Autobiography." It was distributed, discussed, and worked on as a class and as individuals on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017.
This attachment includes examples of Rambling Autobiographies, instructions for writing one, and tips. If students were absent, they should do the exercise on a separate piece of paper, and then staple it into their Writer's Notebook upon return.
This exercise needs to be completed, because we will be using it in many future classroom lessons, ranging from composition to grammar.

100-Word True Story Instructions

Attached is the "100-Word True Story Instructions." It was distributed, read, and discussed in class on Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017. It is to be used in conjunction with "100-Word True Story Examples," a separate handout of examples from a Readers Digest contest.
The 100-word True Story was to be turned in by the end of the bell on Thursday. Students also were to save the files electronically for possible future use.

Your 100-Word True Story Examples

The 100-word story was to be turned in by the end of the bell on Thursday.

Six-Word Memoir: Describe Your Life in Six Words

Attached is an article called Describe Your Life in Six Words. It was distributed and discussed in class on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017.
It includes the instructions for what we did in class, writing a Six-Word Memoir.
When students finished, they published their work, which involved taping it to the board.
It was due at the end of class. If you were absent, follow these instructions, and then get an index card from Mr. Braam.

"Night Falls" Editing Exercise to be edited

DUE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED FROM THURSDAY TO FRIDAY

Attached is the first two pages of "Night Falls," a personal narrative that I wrote a number of years back.
I have rewritten the text to add spelling, punctuation and grammar mistakes. It was distributed and discussed in class on Tuesday, Sept. 19. Students are supposed to read the text, then make corrections using the proofreading marks that we have been learning.
It is due at the start of class on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017.

Copyediting Symbols Practice-HW

Attached is a Proofreading/Copyediting Practice  worksheet that was distributed and supposedly finished in class on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017. It was used in conjunction with a list of proofreading symbols/marks that was also distributed Monday.
It should be completed and brought back to class on Tuesday for discussion.

Proofreading Marks and Symbols

Attached is a list of proofreading marks and symbols. The shorter list of the two is included on the second sheet; however, I put the most-used symbols on an easier-to-read chart!
These charts were passed out and discussed in class on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017. They are to be used to complete a practice proofreading/copyediting worksheet that was distributed and supposedly completed in class also on Monday.
Both the practice sheet and the weekend's Find the Errors HW that was graded in class should be brought to class on Tuesday.
