Steinbeck bio-M&M Background Notes Form

Attached is a note-taking form to be used in conjunction with a PowerPoint covering the biography of John Steinbeck and background information about Of Mice and Men
It was watched and discussed in class on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017. The PowerPoint was also posted.

"To a Mouse," old and new English

Attached is the Robert Burns poem, "To A Mouse." It is the poem that gives the John Steinbeck novel Of Mice and Men its name.
The poem is recorded here in both the original 1785 English and translated into modern English.
It is used in conjunction with a PowerPoint that includes a video of a reading in the old English.

M&M Anticipation Guide-"To a Mouse" PP

Attached is a PowerPoint that includes several activities: an Of Mice and Men Anticipation Guide follow-up, a link to Prezi asking additional questions to be debated, and the Robert Burns poem, "To A Mouse" -- which is where the book Of Mice and Men gets its title.
Students received and began the Anticipation Guide on Monday, then watched and discussed this PowerPoint on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017.  They also received a printout of the poem "To A Mouse," which they used to follow along to a reading/video.

MM Anticipation Guide

Attached is an Anticipation Guide for use before reading Of Mice and Men. It was distributed, discussed and worked on during class on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017.
Students are to read a series of statements, then decide if they are true or false.
Then, on the back of the sheet, students choose the one statement that they either agree with or disagree with most and write a paragraph explaining why.
This assignment is due by the start of class on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017.
The students' responses will be used again during an assignment at the end of the unit, so it is important to finish this assignment completely.

Problems with Personal Narratives

Attached is a PowerPoint that was watched and discussed on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, on Common Problems Found in Sophomore Personal Narratives.
While each personal narrative is obviously unique, I have discovered that annually there are many common problems that students have that they can look for and fix. This lecture discusses those problems, how to recognize them, and how to fix them, utilizing examples from previous students' actual narratives.

POLICY ENFORCEMENT: Printing BEFORE class begins

ATTENTION, PLEASE!!!
Up until today, I have been rather lenient with students not following repeated directions and policy about printing assignments and having them ready at the start of the bell -- ready to work on an activity -- despite warning them constantly to do so.
Today, however, I was swamped with students who did not have them ready, and we wasted a large portion of time with students streaming in and out of the room to go print Rough Draft #2.
Sooooooo ... from this day onward, if students do not have their papers ready and have to go print them after the bell has rung, the work will be treated as late. This is not new; rather, it is a policy enforcement

Student options for printing are many. For example, students can print:
1. In class while working on papers the days before the due date.
2. In the school library for one hour before school
3. In the school library for one hour after school
4. In the school library during lunch (or during a study hall or an intervention bell)
5. In another teacher's room, if they have a printer and give permission
6. At home
7. At Lane Library
8. In an open computer lab, if it is available during the day
9. Plus -- AS ALWAYS -- students may email me the paper before the due time and I will print it (however, get a conformation that I have received an email).
10, Or bring me a flash drive BEFORE the due time and I will print it.
11. Or come to me before school and open your Google Drive and I will print it.

With so many options, there really is no excuse for not getting a paper printed beforehand.
Thank you for kind participation!!!!

Rough Draft #2 and NoRedInk.com

I hope everyone had a good day off and that everyone of legal age went to vote on Tuesday!
Just an update: We are working on the second rough draft Wednesday and Thursday. A printed copy of the draft must be brought to class on Friday, Nov. 10, for a second round of peer editing.
Otherwise, the only other HW for the next few days is to complete and practice exercises and quizzes on NoRedInk.com that your child may have not completed in class on Monday or a few weeks ago. Most students have finished the online tasks, but a few linger.
One additional review task has been added to NoRedInk on Thursday ..., FANBOYS (Coordinating Conjunctions)

Semicolon powerpoint

Attached is a PoerPoint on the usage of Semicolons.A portion of it was viewed and discussed in class on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017. It followed a lecture on Conjunctive Adverbs/Lawyer Words.
Additional work on semicolons will be done online on Monday.

Conjunctive Adverbs-Lawyer Words Lecture

Attached is a PDF version of a SmartBoard lecture given in class on Friday, Nov. 3, 2017, discussing Conjunctive Adverbs/Lawyer Words. Students took notes and discussed the concept.
It was followed by a PowerPoint lecture on Semicolons. It was only partially completed, because more will be discussed on Monday in some online exercises.

Dialogue Rules Guided Practice

Attached is a worksheet to help practice using the dialogue rules that we discussed in class. It was handed out and discussed in class on Wed., Nov. 1, 2017. It was begun at the end of class. If students did not finish, it is to be done as HW and is due at the start of the class on Thursday, Nov. 2
It used in conjunction with the already posted PowerPoint on Dialogue Rules and notes.
