Ind. and Dep. Clauses REVIEW NOTES AND EXERCISES-KEY

For those students who desire it, attached are notes and some practice exercises -- along with an answer key -- in preparation for the previously announced quiz on Independent and Dependent Clauses on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2017.
The notes that are included with this are a synopsized version of notes that were taken in class and also presented here online in either PDF or PowerPoint format.

READ THIS: Things To Bring for PSAT Testing Wed.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, all sophomores and juniors will be taking the PSAT. It will last most of the morning.
Students are required to bring:
* A photo ID (school ID, driver's license, etc.)
* #2 pencil, not mechanical. (At least one, but you would be better off to have two or more)
* A calculator
In addition, you may bring a book to read if you finish early and have to wait for the testing period to end. NOTE: You are NOT allowed to work on HW during the test.
Remember to report to your first bell for attendance, and then you will be sent to your testing site.
Good luck!

Personal Narratives Mentor Texts 2017-18

Attached in PDF format are 11 Personal Narrative Mentor Texts. Students were to select 4 of the texts to read and analyze (using a set of questions already posted). Each set of questions is already attached to the handouts in class.
They were chosen and begin to be read on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017. All four sets of questions will be due on Monday, Oct. 16.
All 4 Mentor Texts selected by each student should be brought to class daily over the next week, as they will be given time to work on them in class.
NOTE: Class schedules are irregular this week, as we will having speakers Tuesday, the PSAT Wednesday, and a test over clauses Thursday. That is why it will be due next week, instead of in just a few days.

Analyzing Personal Narratives 17-18

Attached is a list of questions that is to be used with each personal narrative Mentor Text that students are reading this week. It was passed out, discussed, and worked on during class on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, and will be used through out the week.
NOTE Each set of questions was attached to the four narratives that each student selected (a copy of all 11 choices has also been posted). Each set of questions will be turned in on Monday, Oct. 16. They are worth 30 points apiece.

Quiz on Thursday Over Ind. and Dep. Clauses

Note: As announced in class earlier this week, there will be a longish, yet relatively simple multiple-choice quiz on Thursday, Oct.12, on Independent and Dependent Clauses.
Students will be asked some general questions about clauses, and then asked to identify individual clauses as Independent or Dependent, and then to identify them within a sentence.
We have been discussing and practicing the concept for two weeks in class. They can look back at classwork and HW, plus examine their notes.
NOTE: Originally the quiz was going to be Monday, but I decided to give more time to study due to Homecoming and some students needing extra clarification.

"The Time-Bound Man" Narrative Example

Attached is a short story called "The Time-Bound Man." It was passed out, discussed and worked on in class on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017. It is our next step in being able to analyze texts.
Students are to read the story and then answer the attached questions.
It will be due at the start of the bell on Monday, Oct. 9. Time is being given in class to finish the assignment
NOTE: Yes, it is Homecoming Weekend, but there should be sufficient time allowed in class on Thursday and Friday for students to finish the text and even other work before the weekend, if they apply themselves.

"Car Trip" Short Personal Narrative

Attached is "Car Trip," a short personal narrative that was distributed, discussed, analyzed, and worked on in class on Wed., Oct. 4, 2017. Students wrote the answers in their Writer's Notebook.
We will be discussing the answers on Thursday.
If you were absent Wednesday, download this file and write the answers on a separate sheet of paper. You can staple it into your Notebook when you return to school.

Conjunction Practice HW

Attached is Conjunction Practice HW that was passed out and discussed in class on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017. Students were given time to work on it in class once they finished with the day's rather short online assignment.
It will be due and checked for accuracy/points at the start of class on Friday, Oct. 6.

MLA Requirements

Attached is a file distributed in class on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2017, in conjunction with a MLA formatting video and practice formatting sheet. It should be kept throughout thee year, as we will be constantly using MLA format in our work.

MLA Formatting Using Microsoft Word Video

Attached is a video that is to be watched and utilized in class on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017. Students will watch it, and then correct a related file to match MLA format requirements (already posted).
Absent students can watch this video for advice.
NOTE: We will be using MLA formatting and citation styles all year and throughout high school

Conjunctions/Clauses HW

Attached is a HW sheet that was passed out and discussed (and perhaps worked on for a few minutes) on Monday, Oct. 2, 2017. Students were to work on it, if possible during class, then bring it back to class to work if time on Tuesday. It will be due Wed., Oct. 4.
Follow instructions closely on sheet.
