Homework Page, Braam 2017-18 CCR English 10

Course Description

This Page is designated for Mr. Braam's 2017-18 CCR English 10 classes. It contains primarily downloadable files of homework and presentations given in class.
This is for students who either were absent, forgot their HW at school, or else wanted a review opportunity with a presentation, such as PowerPoints.

"Victor"-"Porphyria's Lover" Compare/Contrast Prompt

Attached is the prompt for the "Victor"-"Porphyria's Lover"  Compare/Contrast essay that the class will be writing. It is one of four handouts on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018.
NOTE: Although there are lines on the prompt that can be used for notes and/or a rough draft, the final response will have to be typed

Porphyria's Lover: Poem of the Day

Attached is the Robert Browning poem "Porphyria's Lover." It was distributed, read and discussed in class on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, in conjunction with three other handouts.
Students will be using this poem to do a Compare/.Contrast essay with the WH Auden poem "Victor," which we have already discussed and analyzed./

"Victor" Poem of the Day, plus WS

Attached is the WH Auden poem "Victor" -- a tale of Love, Relationships ... and Murder!!! It is one of my favorites.
It was distributed, read, and heavily discussed in class on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018. Students are to bring it back to class on Friday, when they will have much of the bell to work on it.
It is due at the start of class on Monday, Jan. 22.
NOTE: Completing this assignment and doing a thorough analysis of it is very important, as it is Part I of two poems we will read and eventually do a large Compare and Contrast about. Failure to do this assignment could lead to not being able to do the later assignment.

Reminder on End-of-Quarter/Semester Work

Students have been getting constant reminders since we have returned to school, but Monday, Jan. 22 is the last day of the quarter.
All late work is to be completed and handed in by Friday, Jan. 19, unless other arrangements have been made (due to excessive illnesses, surgeries, etc.).
* Also, remaining hall passes for extra credit are to be turned in either Friday or Monday.
* Why We Proofread photos would have to be posted to me by Monday to get extra credit for this quarter (though I welcome them for third and fourth quarters!)

Reflection Sheet for Personal Narrative

Attached is a reflection sheet for the personal narrative. It was distributed, discussed and worked on in class on Wed., Jan. 17, 2018, after narratives were distributed. Students are to reflect upon their experiences, and fill in the form accordingly.
It is due Thurs., Jan. 18, and will go on the 2nd-quarter grades.

"Annabel Lee" and Q&A

Attached is the Edgar Allen Poe poem "Annabelle Lee" and a set of related questions. The poem was read and discussed in class on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018. Students then worked on the related questions in class.
The completed worksheet is due at the start of class on Thursday, Jan. 18.

Additional Files to Come (I hope)

NOTE: Assuming that I can get my software to work properly, I will also be posting several electronic versions of packets at a later time that deal with figurative language.
Three have been distributed and worked on when time in class or as HW, but they will not be due until a TBA date. The three already distributed are still available in the classroom.

Fireworks-Absence LEST poems, plus Taxi Sample and Prezi Link

Attached are two additional Amy Lowell poems, "Fireworks" and "Absence." They were read and discussed (some) on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018.
Students discussed their "The Taxi" LEST responses, watched a Prezi presentation about "The Taxi" (https://prezi.com/sjoz8ypzwl7f/the-taxi-by-amy-lowell/). They also have a sample LEST essay on "The Taxi" in the handout.
Students then were to pick either "Fireworks" or "Absence" and begin another LEST analysis that will be due at the start of class on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
(NOTE: It will still be due Tuesday even if we have a snow day on Friday. Students were told in class on Thursday many times to take their work home just in case, both for my class and other classes.)

The Taxi -- Poem of the Day -Amy Lowell

Attached is the Amy Lowell poem, "The Taxi," along with a series of questions. We read and discussed the poem in class on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The class then had the entire bell to answer the questions and write a short LEST essay. Though most students finished it during class, they had until the start of class on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, to finish and turn it in for a grade.

FYI: We will be doing more and more of these types of assignments, as students need to increase their writing stamina, plus get used to writing more in-depth analysis responses in preparation for the state-mandated End of Course exams later this year.

Why Analyze Poetry?-Start of LEST

Attached is a PowerPoint that we watched and discussed over two days.
The first day discusses why being able to analyze poetry is important to being able to analyze things in the real world.
The second day discusses a specific method of poetry analysis known LEST (Literal, Emotional, Stylistic, and Thematic). We did a practice LEST essay with the Emily Dickinson poem, "If I Can Stop One Heart From Breaking" which will also be posted.

The Sound of Silence -- Poem of the Day

This poem/song, "The Sound of Silence" by Paul Simon, was first shown in two video versions (which I cannot post, but you can look them up online).
The first was a live concert version in Central Park by Simon and Garfunkel. The second version was the more recent remake by the band Disturbed.
Viewing the videos would be helpful, perhaps, to understanding, but is not mandatory.
Students then worked on the questions and turned the answers in by the end of the bell for a grade (most students were done in about 15 minutes of writing).

HW in January

Greetings,
I have just discovered that for some unknown reason, most of my posts during January have not shown up online or in people's emails. I apologize for not double-checking. For that reason, I am sending out a large number of them again.
NOTE: Many of these posts are for assignments that should already be completed and turned in. Only a few of the final ones that I will send out at this time will be live assignments that have not been turned in yet.
Also realize that more than several of these assignments were discussed, worked on, and completed in class, then turned in, so there would not have been HW that night.
