Another Reason Why ... Diction and Tone Air Practice

"Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House" is a Billy Collins poem that we used to practice for the AIR test on Monday, April 9, 2018. It was due at the end of the bell. It was being used to practice working for speed analysis and writing. The in-class portion we did only involved Tone. However, I have included in this electronic version a section on diction, plus several different people's analysis of the poem overall.

Rubric for your Rhetoric Ads Poster Project

Attached is the rubric for the Rhetoric Poster project. It was distributed and discussed (along with a template) on Monday, but students did not begin working on the project with a partner until Tuesday. Students will have all bell Wednesday to work on the poster, and maybe 15 minutes Thursday to do final touchups before turning it in.  Students MUST follow the rubric and template closely to receive full credit, so read carefully,

Template for your Rhetoric Ads Poster Project

Attached is the template for the Rhetoric Poster Project that students are working on in class with a partner. They are going through magazines looking for examples of six specific types of ads. Students received the rubric and template (on one sheet, but posted separately) and discussed it on Monday, but the students did not actually begin working on it until Tuesday, March 13. Students will have all Wednesday to work on the project, and then can do final touchups Thursday, March 15, before turning it in. We will NOT spend the entire bell Thursday on the project, because we have to discuss an upcoming assignment.

Persuasion/Rhetoric Vocabulary Note-Taking

Attached is a note-taking form for Persuasion/Rhetoric Vocabulary that is to be used in conjunction with a PowerPoint on that topic. Due to a family emergency, students will have worked on and finished this assignment over a number of different days, some beginning as early as Tuesday and others beginning Thursday. I am hoping that all students will finish with the note-taking by Friday, but one or two bells may be finishing a few terms on Monday.
NOTE: This vocabulary list is crucial, as students will have to be able to define the terms, recognize them in texts and advertisements, plus utilize them and explain them in projects and tests. THIS IS NOT AN ASSIGNMENT TO BLOW OFF IF ABSENT ... WE WILL BE USING THESE TERMS AND CONCEPTS THE REMAINDER OF THIS YEAR AND INTO THE NEXT!!!!!

Persuasion-Rhetoric Vocabulary

Attached is a PowerPoint on Persuasion and Rhetoric Vocabulary. Due to a family emergency, my different bells started discussing and will finish this on different days, ranging from Tuesday through Friday. There is an accompanying form that will also be posted for note-taking.

Warning: No Phones Out At Any Point Monday

Parents: An early warning for your children.

During Monday's class, no phones will be allowed out at any point, either before, during, or after the quiz on Text Structures. If a student gets a phone out at any point, they will receive a zero on the quiz. No exceptions.
There has been a rash of cheating in different classes recently, and I want there to be no opportunity to snap a photo of the test and share it with other students in later bells.

MLA Requirements Reminder Sheet

Attached is a MLA Requirements Reminder Sheet, to prod your memory of everything that must be included in MLA style. Use it with the Independent Novel Essay that you are to turn in on Monday, March 5.
Read it.
Use it.
Live it!!!

Monday, March 5

Just a reminder to my students: As I have been repeating all week:
* The first prompt response for the Independent Novel unit is due Monday
* The quiz over Text Structures is Monday
* The handout on How Slavery Really Ended in America is due Monday.
You have had the better part of the week to work on and prepare for these items, so buckle down and get them all done ... and done well!!!
(NOTE TO PARENTS: Many, if not most, of the students have already finished these items and will be studying Friday for Monday's quiz. The only reason that the items are all due on Monday was to give those  who are behind a chance to catch up.)

How Slavery Really Ended in America

Attached is "How Slavery Really Ended in America," an article and questions that were distributed, discussed and worked on in class on Thursday, March 1, 2018.
It is due at the start of class on Monday, March 5. It is a practice for recognizing Text Structures and Text Features.

Crucial Reminder About Writing/Saving Essays in Class

We will be working on our first response to our independent novels over the next few days in class. As a reminder, students will need a method to save their work.
As those of you who have Butler Tech classes have discovered, ALWAYS have a backup plan for saving your work, including printing out copies each day of what you have finished.
(For those of you parents who do not know, Butler Tech's networks and computers have all been infected by a virus/malware, and the entire system -- servers, PCs, and laptops -- will all have to be re-imaged ... the process may take a month or more before it is completed. That is why it is crucial to have backup plans).

Upcoming Quiz

ATTENTION: There will be a quiz over Text Structures on Monday, March 5.
