Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year at Fairfield Compass Elementary School!  Last year was a year unlike any other, and together we successfully made it through.  I am so excited to see the Compass family reunited as we kick off another super terrific, totally awesome, fun-filled year!

Compass Elementary is such a special place to be and that is thanks to you, our students, and our staff. The people here make our school the kind of place you are happy to walk into because you can just "feel the love."  We are focused on building positive relationships with you and your child because we believe that meaningful relationships built on trust are a must for true learning to occur.  We want to ensure all who enter our doors feel safe, valued, heard, and respected.

Our students and staff will be learning and growing each and every day together.  Our staff strives to learn about each of our students on an individual level so we can best meet their needs not only academically, but also emotionally and socially. We believe that while test scores are important, they do not solely define your child.  We will focus on educating the whole child.  We will most definitely be teaching your child academic skills, but along the way, we will also be incorporating lessons on compassion, courage, forgiveness, and gratitude.

In short, we have something really special here at Compass and I am so grateful you and your family are a part of it! We have one of the most hardworking and passionate staffs around, amazing students with tremendous potential, and trusting parents who are involved and value education. That is a recipe for success!

I say this each and every year, but please know the main question that will guide us as we make decisions for the children at Compass is "Would this be what I would expect for my own child?" As a mother of 3 children (one at the freshman school, one at the high school, and one now in college) I understand the trust a parent must have in their child's school and that is not a trust I take lightly. Every decision will be made thinking about what is best for our students.   If it is not good enough for my own child, it is not good enough for yours.

I have attached to this letter, some important information regarding this upcoming year. Please take the time to read through it, and know that if you have any questions, comments, or concerns that I urge you to contact us. Together, we will be doing our best every day as we follow the Compass Way!

Your principal,

Mrs. Kim Hauer

Fairfield Compass Elementary Information
  • Included with the above letter will be a teacher introduction letter letting you know who your child's teacher is. This letter and teacher name will be mailed soon.  Additionally, all teachers will be preparing a virtual open house presentation. Teachers will send a Remind message to their parents on August 13 with info on how to access their virtual presentation.  There is also a lot of back-to-school information on the district website at www .fairfieldcityschools.com.

  • Building Tours: With open house being virtual, we wanted to give our parents an opportunity to walk the building with their child (especially for our incoming kindergartners and new students). Compass will be open for self-guided tours on Wednesday, August 11 from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Not all staff/teachers will be in the building on this day, but office staff will be available to answer any questions you may have.

  • Final Forms- VERY IMPORTANT- Take care of this now! To ensure you receive the Remind information mentioned above, please make sure we have your most up-to-date contact information in Final Forms.  Final Forms is the new way we are collecting almost all the beginning of the school year paperwork from parents. This replaces the stack of papers you received in the past in the white folder on Meet the Teacher Night that had to be completed by hand.  If you have not yet completed your Final Forms, you need to do so ASAP.  The link to do so is https://fairfield-oh.finalforms.com/  Please call us at 858-8700 if you need help completing your Final Forms.  We are happy to help!

  • The first day of school for the students in grades 1-5  will be Tuesday, August 17.

  • The first day of school for kindergartners is staggered.  This means kindergarten students will be assigned to come in on either August 17, 18, OR 19 with the first typical day where all kindergartners attend together being on August 20.

  • School hours for students grades 1-5 are 9:30AM until4:00 PM.  For kindergarten, the AM session is from 9:30 a.m.-12:10 p.m. and the PM session is from 1:20 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

  • We are pleased to share that school lunches will be free of charge this school year.  Your child is welcome to pack, but if not, we will make sure they get a lunch.  However, if your child wants to purchase additional snacks, they will need money on their lunch account.  You can send in a check, cash or use the PaySchools system to reduce the opportunity for lost money.  Our Cafe Terminal keeps track of each student account balance.  This information does not apply to kindergarten students, as they follow a half-day schedule and are not here during lunchtime.

  • School fees are $60 per child in grades 1-5 and $40 per child for kindergarten. This amount is due by September 24, 2021. If you have questions regarding the payment of this fee, please contact Jenni Ledbetter, the school secretary. Paying on PaySchools through the district website is the preferred and easiest method of payment. You may also stop by the school to pay your fees during regular office hours. Mail the money to us, or send it to school with your child in a clearly marked envelope. If you would like to set up a payment plan for your fees, please call the office and ask to speak with Jenni.  We would be happy to help.

  • Information regarding our Free and Reduced Lunch Program is a part of Final Forms. While lunch is free for everyone this year, these forms must be completed if you want to be considered for a school fee waiver. If you wish to participate in this program, please submit the needed forms through Final Forms. If you have questions about how to do this, please contact our office at 858-8700 as soon as possible. Remember, these forms must be completed each year for reconsideration.

  • Compass has a wonderful PTC (Parents and Teachers for Children) which will meet throughout the year.  Please feel welcome to attend and participate in any of our many activities throughout the year.  This is a wonderful way to stay informed of all that is happening here at Compass.

  • Latchkey is available here at Compass.  The hours are from 6:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. You need to register your child for this program prior to use. Information packets are available in the school office.  Latchkey's phone number is 513-858-8698 if you have questions.

  • A copy of the dress code policy for Fairfield City Schools is included in the Elementary Handbook which is on Final Forms.  Let's help our students establish good habits right from the start. Our most frequent issue is shoes with no back strap. It is for their safety that we require shoes to be firmly attached to feet. Flip-flops and slides are not permitted.  Additionally, we have seen with our older students that purses/mini backpack purses can become a distraction, so please avoid bringing these to school unless absolutely necessary.

  • If your child is going to be absent from school, send us an e-mail to compassattendance@fairfieldcityschools.com by 9:30 a.m. (1:20 p.m. for PM kindergarten). This will notify us and count as your written note for your child's return!  If you are unable to email us, please call the office by 9:30 a.m. on the morning of the absence (1:20 p.m. for PM kindergarten) to let us know, along with sending in a note with your child when he/she returns.  If we do not receive an email note from you each day of an absence, an automated Remind message will let you know that your child is missing from school.

  • Students need to be here every day to get the full Compass experience!  Here is a reminder concerning the Board policy regarding "Student Absences and Excuses."  If a child is absent from school, we must receive an absence note from the parent/custodian no more than three days after the student's return.  If no documentation is received, the absence will be deemed unexcused which could lead to an Attendance Intervention Plan being put in place.

  • We strongly encourage children to ride the bus to and from school each day.  Our front drop-off area will be very congested.  However, if you do need to drop your child off, morning drop-off time is 9:20- 9:30 a.m. We let students in the building at 9:25 a.m. For our afternoon kindergarten friends, the drop-off time is 1:20 p.m.  Thank you in advance for your patience as we get students into the building in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Lastly, don't forget to smile!  School is starting and Compass Elementary is a great place to be!

A Letter to Compass Elementary School Kindergarten Parents

August 2021

Dear Kindergarten Parents,

Welcome to Fairfield Compass Elementary School! You are receiving this letter because you have a child registered to start kindergarten.  If you are like me, having had all three of my children go through kindergarten in Fairfield, you are thinking “I cannot believe my baby is old enough to be going to school.”

I know it may be hard to believe, but your child is going to grow into such an independent little person this year!  Having worked in Fairfield for the past 20 years, I have witnessed firsthand how well all of the children adapt to school and how very quickly they learn the routines and procedures that we have set.  I have discovered that tears on the first day of school don’t typically come from the students, but most likely come from the parents. I’ve been that teary-eyed parent… so proud, but yet still in disbelief that she is old enough to go to school without meJ. I promise you that we will do everything we can to ensure your child is safe and taken care of.  That is my number one priority and it always will be.  I understand how much your child means to you and I am honored that you are sharing and trusting them with us here at Compass.

I’m sure that you have many questions as you prepare for your child to start school.  Please know that your child’s teacher will mail out a letter to you on August 11. They will also send you a link to a virtual open house via Remind on August 13. Additionally, Compass will be open for self-guided tours on August 11 from 9:00 AM-11:00 AM and 1:00 PM-3:00 PM.  Not all staff/teachers will be in the building on this day, but I, along with additional office staff will be here and available to answer any questions you may have.

I do want to give you a heads up on how the first day of school for kindergartners works.  We realize that for many children, this is their first school experience.  Because of that, on the first day of school, we want there to be fewer students in the classroom so that the teacher can talk with them in a small group, answer all of their questions, and get to know them better.  To do this, kindergartners have a staggered start to the school year.  This means for the first 3 days of school (August 17, 18, and 19) only part of the class will come each day.  The teacher will assign which day your child is to attend and that information will be included in the teacher letter that will be mailed out on August 11.   If they are assigned to come on August 17, they will stay home on August 18 and 19.  If they are assigned to come on August 18, they will stay home on August 17 and 19.  If they are assigned to come on August 19, they will stay home on August 17 and 18.  All kindergarten students will attend together on August 20.

Also, please know that we strongly encourage you to put your child on the bus on the very first day of school.  The first day is when the bus driver goes over bus rules and assigns seats.  It is critical that your child be a part of that experience.  If you must, put your child on the bus and then follow the bus to school to put your mind at ease that first day J  Again, I promise that we will take care of your child.

We are going to have an amazing year together and I can’t wait to meet you and your family!  As always, if you have questions, comments, or concerns please do not hesitate to ask.  I am here to help ensure that your first experience with Fairfield City Schools is a safe and positive one!

Your principal,

Mrs. Kim Hauer
