Word: Should Freshman Choose Roommates Article-Questions-Counterclaim Review

Attached is an article, "Should College Freshmen Choose Their Own Roommates?" Along with it are a set of questions, plus some review notes on the concept of Counterclaims. This version is in Word format (a PDF format file has also been posted).
This assignment will be completed and reviewed in class by everyone; however, if a student walks in the door on the first day back from Spring Break with the assignment in hand and completed in full, that student will gain extra credit points. Those students who have completed the assignment will then assist those who need help with the concepts of appeals, claims and counterclaims.

Debate: Yes-No Does the U.S. Need Illegal Immigrants?

Attached is a homework packet called "Debate: Yes-No Does the U.S. Need Illegal Immigrants?" It was distributed in class on Friday, March 28, 2015, and will be due the first day back from Spring Break, Monday, April 6.
It is mostly multiple choice questions, but the only way to receive ANY credit for the HW is to answer all of the questions, including the one short response at the end (along with including cited evidence in the short response).

Rhetoric-Persuasion-Fallacies of Arguments Flip Chart

Attached is a study guide for the Rhetoric/Persuasion/Fallacies of Arguments concepts we have been studying the last several weeks. If you fold the sheet along the long line, it becomes a flip chart that has terms on one side and definitions/examples on the other side that can be used for drills.
Please use this over Spring Break to begin studying for upcoming tests.
Grab a parent and have them drill you on the terms!!!

Tone Exercises HW (due April 6)

Attached are three short exercises to practice the Diction, Tone and Mood concepts we have been reviewing the last several days. For most bells, it was distributed on Friday, March 27.
It will be due the first day we come back from break, Monday, April 6.

Why We Proofread ... (a continuing series)

This photo, I admit, is a few years old, but front-page proofreading miscues are always amusing.
Can you see the mistake? Look hard ... sometimes the brain reads what it WANTS to see, and lets you read right over large mistakes.
Still can't see it?
Ask yourself why the Bears and the Packers would play an NFL game in Chicaco!!!!

Tone/Mood Student Lesson Summary

Attached is a convenient handout that goes with our Multimedia PowerPoint on Diction, Tone and Mood that posted earlier. It defines many of the related terms and gives a step-by-step process for helping identify the tone in a text.

Tone/Mood Words

Attached is a list of words for Tones and Moods, broken down into words that have Positive, Negative, and Neutral connotations.
This works in conjunction with a PowerPoint on Diction, Tone and Mood that was posted earlier.

Diction, Tone and Mood PowerPoint

Attached is a Multimedia PowerPoint on Diction, Tone, and Mood that includes paintings, videos, and poems that the students are analyzing over a 2-3 day period in class.
Some additional handouts and HW sheets will be posted separately. Most work and discussion is being done in class in our Writers Notebooks.
Note: This is a LARGE file with embedded videos that may take a while to download.

Sample Independent Novel Final Paper

Attached is a file showing what the body text of the Independent Novel Final Paper should look like and describing what should be in each paragraph. It was created and distributed in class today (March 24) after a number of students said that they were confused as to how the paper would look. The answer? Essentially, it looks just like all of the other three responses, just longer!!!
In addition, it has a cover in the form of a redesigned book cover.

Parallel Structure Review

Attached is a  notes sheet about parallel structure that is posted to help students with review for one of the questions in an in-class assignment distributed Monday, March 23. The assignment, with questions, is called "Is Football Just Too Dangerous?"

"Is Football Just Too Dangerous?" article/questions

Attached is an in-class assignment distributed Monday, March 23. It includes an article and questions that are in the exact same style format as a portion of an upcoming test over persuasion, rhetoric and fallacies of rhetoric.
Note: A notes sheet about parallel structure will be posted to help students with review for one of the questions. It was also distributed Monday.
The work will be due Thursday, March 26, at the start of class

Ind. Novel Final Paper Rubric

Attached is the rubric/scoresheet for the Independent Novel final paper. None of the requirements have changed ... it is still worth 100 points; however, this attaches point by point values to what you are required to have.
NOTE: Be aware that the X-Factor/Teacher Discretion worth 10 points can get you up to 5 points of Extra Credit. It is primarily based upon effort, neatness and overall impression.
