RAISIN stage directions

Attached is a file distributed in class on Monday, April 27, 2015, that was used in conjunction with a short Powerpoint on stage directions posted earlier. Students are to take notes on the first few pages of A Raisin in the Sun, then draw the stage for the play based on the stage directions.

Stage Directions

Attached is a short Powerpoint dealing with the concept of stage directions that was shown in class on Monday, April 27. It is to be used in connection with the stage directions in the first several pages of Act 1 of A Raisin in the Sun. A separate file will be posted for HW, where the students will be drawing the stage setup.

ACT Tests on Tuesday, April 28

FYI, Parents: Your child will be taking the ACT college entrance exam on Tuesday, April 28. Please particularly note parts about lunch and snacks. Also be aware that no electronics (phones.iPods, etc.) are to be permited in the room and that students are to provide their own calculators and pencils.

The following comes from the High School morning announcements:
"Families: On April 28th all sophomores and juniors will be taking the ACT assessments. 10th graders will take a practice ACT and 11th graders, the real ACT (no Writing). The practice ACT will be graded by the district and results will be given to students/families before the end of the year. The 11th grader’s ACT will be sent off to the company for scoring. Students may choose to have their scores sent to up to four colleges. This can be indicated on their registration form, which is being completed in their English class this week. If no colleges are selected, the tests will still be scored and sent home. If you so choose, the scores can then be sent to colleges at a later time through ACT (for a fee). Due to the length of the test, lunch will have to start significantly later than normal (12:45). All students are encouraged to bring a snack on test day. Time will be given to eat during a 15-minute break and then again once testing has concluded.

The high school is in a unique situation because there is no assessment for 12th graders. In addition, most of the building will be occupied with testing. Therefore, on the 28th, all seniors are to report to the Arena by 8:00 for a field/activity day. They will be supervised by staff and given a variety of options. Once testing has concluded (around 12:45) all students will report to either lunch or their 4th period class.

With the higher level of academic expectation that the state of Ohio has for all students, Fairfield is committed to monitoring college and career readiness for all of our students and using the information we receive from these assessments to improve our academic programming. You will receive information about your child’s results, and your child will be using the results from these assessments to set goals for the future. We will also continue to use data from these assessments to help make student placement decisions such as advanced and intervention programming.

If you have any questions, please contact the school at (513)942-2999."

Raisin in the Sun books distributed

A Note to Parents: Copies of the play A Raisin in the Sun were distributed in class on Thursday, April 23. Students are to bring the books to class every day, as we will be reading from them aloud almost daily. They will receive points for having the books in class.

Assignments made Friday, April 24

Two Parts of Speech worksheets were assigned for in-class work Friday, April 24, during my absence, one on Adjectives and the other on Interjections. They students were also assigned the reading of the Raisin in the Sun introduction (Pages 1-14, I-XIV).
There should have been plenty of time to complete all three assignments in class, but the trio will be due Monday, April 27.

Interjections WS

Attached is one of two worksheets assigned for in-class work Friday, April 24, during my absence, This one is on Interjections, one of the 8 Parts of Speech. It will be due Monday, April 27, along with a WS on Adjectives and the reading of the Raisin in the Sun introduction (Pages 1-14, I-XIV).

Adjectives WS

Attached is one of two worksheets assigned for in-class work Friday, April 24, during my absence, This one is on Adjectives, one of the 8 Parts of Speech. It will be due Monday, April 27, along with a WS on Interjections and the reading of the Raisin in the Sun introduction (Pages 1-14, I-XIV).

Conjunctions WS

Attached is a short worksheet on recognizing and utilizing conjunctions that was done in class on Wednesday, April 22. While our class continues working on other items, we will continue reviewing various grammatical concepts, such as the 8 Parts of Speech, leading up to additional, more complicated types. While some students have long since mastered the 8 Parts of Speech, recent exercises -- such as the Persuasive Letter -- showed that many students have not mastered them; hence, we review!!!

We will discuss the answers to Conjunctions on Thursday, April 23.

Nouns WS

Attached is a short worksheet on recognizing nouns that was done in class on Tuesday, April 21.
We will discuss the answers to Nouns on Wednesday, April 22.

Additional WS on other concepts will follow.

Persuasive Letter to Congress

Attached is a handout from class on Thursday, April 16, dealing with Wednesday's episode at the U.S. Capitol where a Florida postal worker landed a gyrocopter on the Capitol lawn as part of a protest dealing with campaign finances.
The assignment -- which is due Monday, April 20 -- is a persuasive letter written to a congress member (or any other political body, for that matter) on any topic/issue that the student has a passion for.
Instructions are in the handout.
Included in the Word file is a link to a short video at the Tampa Bay newspaper that shows the gyrocopter and talks to the postal worker. It is also included here:

http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/elections/ruskin-mailman-tries-flying-to-capitol-in-gyrocopter-to-deliver-campaign/2225584

Note: This is NOT meant to be a book. It is a simple letter that needs to merely include the items requested in the handout. Perhaps the MOST important items to include are the labeled 8 Parts of Speech (we are headed back into a bout with grammar, and this is a way to kickstart our brains!).

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

One of my 2nd-bell students, who happens -- as a sophomore -- to have a real part in the upcoming "Mary Poppins" production at Fairfield High School (woo-hoo!!!!), noticed that the cast T-shirt had a "minor" misspelling. Luckily, it was also caught by the stellar proofreading staff/directors and is in the process of being fixed!!!!

Here is your look at what could have been not so "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
Do you see what is wrong???

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

One of my 3rd-bell students discovered this gem at a Fairfield KFC. She quickly took a snap of how the chicken joint is selling "FAM BOLWS."
At first, I thought it was "Fan Blows" ... and that just made NO sense!!!!
But then I realized it was "Family Bowls." Or, then again, it could be "Famous Bowls."
Just one more reason why we also have to be clear when we write, because you may not be interpreted in a way you expect!!!

Parents: Your Child Has Tests Friday, Monday and Tuesday

Parents: Just a quick head's-up: We have English tests that run Friday through Tuesday for which your child should be studying.
* The Friday test is primarily over persuasion and rhetorical devices/fallacies. See the Persuasion/Rhetoric Study Guide resent earlier

Rhetoric-Persuasion Study Guide/Flip Chart

Attached is a resend of a a study guide/review sheet sent before Spring Break about Rhetoric and Persuasion. It is a crucial key to success for Friday's test (April 10). Please download it if you do not have a copy in hand, and use it to study this evening and before class on Friday

Greetings!
I hope you are having a great spring break!

OFFICE.COM

This note is a reminder for those of you who do not have any access at home to any Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
If you go to Office.com (a Microsoft site), you can utilize the entire Microsoft Office software suite and save all of your work ... FOR FREE!!!!

LANE LIBRARY

I know that some of you also have limited Internet and printer access, but Office.com can also be accessed through the Fairfield Lane Library's 50-60 computers (remember, the Lane Library is your friend!).
In addition, the Lane Library computers have kost of the Office Suite, too, but you would have to save files on your own flash drive or email it to yourself if you wish to not use Office.com at the library. Lane sells 1 GB flash drives for $5, plus also sells earbuds for $1.
Also, Lane has multiple B&W and color printers for 10 cents a page for B&W and 30 cents for color.
To use the library computers or to check out materials, you will need to have your own card ...either a full-access card through your parents or a limited teen access card that you can get without parent signature (check with the library reference desk for details).
