CCR English 10 Homework and Presentations

Course Description

This is an ever-evolving page for Mr. Braam's 2019-20 CCR English 10 classes, Bells 1-3, 6-7.
It will have homework (if possible to electronically post), and various presentations that are made in class (again, if possible to post electronically). It is for students who were either absent, or forgot to bring home items that they need to be able to work. It is the practical, day-to-day page, while my main page will have announcements, tips, student examples, etc..
You can check in here directly on a daily basis, or -- if you subscribe -- you will receive one email each day that I post something new. The email will include a link and explanation. This is an excellent way for parents to keep up on what we are doing!

What do you remember about the parts of speech KEY

Attached are the notes/responses to an exercise we did in class. Students on one side were to write down what they remembered about the parts of speech. Then we watched a PowerPoint and they took notes as to what the Parts of Speech actually were.
NOTE: THIS SHOULD BE REVIEW OF KNOWLEDGE THEY HAVE BEEN TAUGHT SINCE 2ND GRADE!!!!
The PowerPoint will also be posted.
We are reviewing this so students can be taught more difficult concepts such as adverbial clauses and noun phrases, etc.

Rambling Autobiography 19-20

Attached are the instructions and examples to Rambling Autobiography. They were distributed, discussed and worked on in class on Sept. 12, 2019. It will be continued to be worked on in class Friday, plus they will be typed up and edited from the original handwritten notes. This exercise will also be used in conjunction with another upcoming exercise, so it is important that it is completed on time.

Why We Proofread ... (A Continuing Series)

This is an example of the type of local miscue that can earn Mr. Braam's students extra credit. When they see something local and current that contains spelling or grammar mistakes, they should take a photo, send it to me, and then include what it is, where they saw it, what is wrong with it, and how to fix it!
And if you can't see what is wrong with this photo, were you born and raised in Pitttsburgh?!?!?

(And, yes, I did that on purpose!)

Describe Your Life in Six Words

Attached is a handout, along with instructions, for "Describe Your Life in Six Words."
It was distributed, discussed and completed in class on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019.
Five responses written in the Writers Notebook were OK'd by Mr. Braam, then students chose one, wrote it onto an index card, then taped the card to the blackboard at the back of the room to share.
If absent that day, please follow instructions and give to Mr. Braam when you return (index cards can be had in Mr. Braam's room).

'Night Falls' Editing Exercise

Attached is "Night Falls," an abbreviated and purposefully altered article that I wrote about my mother-in-law. It was distributed and discussed in class on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2019. Students are to edit the article using proofreading marks.
It is due at the start of class Monday, Sept. 9.

Reference Chart for Proofreading-Copyediting Symbols

Attached is a Reference Chart for Proofreading-Copyediting Symbols and Marks.
It was distributed, discussed and utilized Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, in conjunction with a worksheet on Practicing Copyediting Symbols/Marks.
HOWEVER, THIS REFERENCE CHART SHOULD BE KEPT ALL YEAR, BECAUSE YOU WILL BE USING THE SYMBOLS ALL YEAR. I suggest that you print it using both sides of the sheet, punch 3 holes in it, and keep it in the binder.

Copyediting Symbols Practice-HW

Attached is Copyediting Symbols Practice-HW, a worksheet distributed, discussed and worked on in class Wednesday, September 4, 2019. Most students finished within the bell, but it is due at the start of class Thursday, Sept. 5 to go over answers. It was distributed with a chart of proofreading symbols that will also be posted.

Find the Errors

Attached is Find the Errors, a practice worksheet that was distributed, discussed and worked on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
It is due at the start of class on Wednesday, Sept. 4.
(The Journalism class also is working on this, but it was distributed a day later.)

"Why Should We Proofread?" Examples 2019-20

Attached is a PowerPoint presentation called "Why Should We Proofread?" that we watched and discussed in class on Thursday, August, 2019. It discusses why the ability to proofread is crucial for everyone, gives many examples of horrible proofreading, plus discusses some tips and tricks on how to improve proofreading skills.
FYI: Students were alerted today to a year-round extra-credit opportunity that involves proofreading. If at any time a student sees a local permanent sign that has bad grammar and/or spelling (such as the examples found in the presentation), then they can take a photo of it and email it to me at [email protected] along with an explanation of what it is, where it is, what is wrong with the sign and how you would go about fixing it. I frequently then also post that new example online on this webpage!

What We Have Been Doing! (Days 4-6)

The last several days we have been taking an SLO test to see where the students are in their writing and reading skills, plus today we got our writing notebooks and made our first entry. That is why you have seen nothing pop up under homework.
If your child's grade looks like a disaster so far, it is likely because they did not hand in an one or all of the first four assignments on time (that included the syllabus, the Letter to the Teacher, the plagiarism form, and the initial survey we handed out on Day 1. They can still hand them in, but they will be marked missing until I have time to go back and enter the grades of all the late work.
Does your child need copies of any of these? They are all posted on the HW page!!!

Letter to the Teacher - Home Issues-Questions 19-20

Attached is a Letter to the Teacher assignment that was distributed and discussed in class on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2019. Students are to fill out the front, then write a letter on the back explaining to the teacher any obstacles at school or at home that may create obstacles to success in my class.
It is due on Monday, Aug. 26.
