Dear Fairfield City School District Parents and Guardians,
The Ohio Department of Education requires the Fairfield City School District to upload certain student information regarding state testing through a third-party organization. The District utilized a company named Battelle for Kids to fulfill this requirement.
Battelle for Kids informed us that on December 1, 2021, it was a victim of a ransomware attack which involved access to information about former and currently enrolled students within the Fairfield City Schools and other districts across the state. The information includes student names, state student IDs, grade level, school year, assessment results, birth dates, and schedule-related information such as the student’s class and teacher name. Social security numbers were not shared with Battelle. The breach did not occur under the control of the Fairfield City School District.
Battelle has confirmed that our district is not the only district in Ohio impacted by this data breach. The district is not aware of any student data from Fairfield or any other district being used for an improper purpose beyond the unauthorized access. Battelle informed us that the data compromise does not require legal notification to families under data breach laws. However, we believe it is important to share this with you.
The following years and grade levels are affected in the Fairfield City Schools:
- 2011-12: Grades 3-12
- 2012-13: Grades 3-12
- 2013-14: Grades K-9
- 2014-15: Grades K-12
- 2015-16: Grades PreK-12
- 2016-17: Grades PreK-12
- 2017-18: Grades PreK-12
We will continue to monitor this matter and will update you if we receive additional information from the Ohio Department of Education and/or Battelle for Kids. If you have any questions about the status of your child’s information, please email [email protected].
