Week of Monday, November 16th!

Good morning!  I hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend!

We are working on our last week in unit 3!  This means that our reading test at the end of the week and our vocab. test will include this week's skill PLUS previous skills that were taught in this unit.  These skills include: problem and solution, questioning, sequencing, cause and effect, and this week's skill of author's reasons.  Homework this week will consist of reviewing and practicing these skills.  We will also be reviewing skills in class while heavily focusing on this week's skill!  Spelling words will focus on CVCe words with long u and high frequency words (2nd grade sight words).  We will also continue working on adverbs and how to use them correctly in our writing.

We will continue working on bar models in math.  Students are doing well with bar models but some are still getting confused on what "parts" of the bar model we already know and the part we are trying to figure out.  This is HUGE because it helps them determine whether we need to add or subtract.  We have really been focusing on VISUALIZING or acting the scenario out in our head and to REALLY think about what the question is asking to help us determine what operation to use.  We will be focusing on adding on and taking away sets as well as comparing two sets (later in the week).  You should have all received an email with the math website that can help your child with bar models, have them practice this a couple of times a week to reinforce what we are learning in class.  I will send another email out to remind you which "skill" we are working on if you want to have your child practice at home!

In social studies, for the next two weeks, we will be focusing on life long ago and comparing it to life now!  We will be learning about clothing, transportation, schooling, daily life, chores, food, and games/entertainment then and now!  This unit is one of my favorites and ties in very well with Thanksgiving!

*Reminders*

Please make sure to empty your child's homework folder each week!  The only thing that should be returned are papers that are homework!  Please keep all other papers at home!  You can keep lined paper or papers that help them with homework in their folder.  Many of the folders are getting too full with previous papers and starting to fall apart!
