FAIRFIELD CITY SCHOOLS WELLNESS PROGRAM

Wellness Goals
  • The district will have Quarterly Wellness themes.
  • Each school will develop a wellness "action plan" based on the four quarterly themes.
  • The building administration and teachers will work to promote healthy snacks, incentives/rewards.
  • The committee will support the buildings and the policy.

First Quarter: Students will attend school in a safe environment, and will conduct themselves in ways that promote safety in themselves and others.
Second Quarter: Students will make wise food and beverage choices based on a sound understanding of nutrition and health.
Third Quarter: Students will attend school in an environment that minimizes exposure to diseases, and will practice personal hygiene to promote a healthy environment.
Fourth Quarter: Students will be physically fit, drawing upon knowledge of a wide range of school-based and lifetime physical activities.

WELLNESS UPDATE
The following changes have taken place in the food service department in order to support a healthier environment in the school cafeterias:

Elementary Level Snacks: Pretzels-Baked Cheetos- Granola Bar- Orchard Fruits (100% Vit C)-Rice Krispie Treat- Popcorn-6oz Juice (100% Vit C)-Fruit Roll ups (100% Vit C).

Secondary Level Snacks: Reduced Fat Doritos- Popcorn-Pretzels-Tortilla Chips-Baked Lays-Fresh Fruit-Chex Mix- Frozen Fruit Bars-Orchard Fruits (100% VitC)-Flavored Water-Enriched Vitamin Drinks-Baked Cheetos-Bagel W/Crème Cheese Fresh Deli Sandwiches on Whole Wheat Bread.

Intermediate School: Serves only 100% fruit juices, reduced portion sizes of all snacks, and added a third lunch-line in the spring of 2007 to shorten the waiting time for all students.

West: Serves only 100% fruit juice, whole grain cereals, bread, and pizza crust, all food is baked, no fried food served. All snacks are baked, fresh fruit is offered each day.

North: Serves only 100% fruit juices, reduced portion sizes of snacks to 1oz, and all snacks are baked, No fried foods served at North, Bread & Pizza crust are now whole grain, Fresh fruit is offered, Milk sales have increased due in large part to four flavors being offered, whole grain cereals with reduced sugar are offered daily.

South: Serves only 100% fruit juice, whole grain cereals, bread, and pizza crust, all food is baked, all snacks are baked, and fresh fruit is offered each day.

East: Serves only 100% fruit juices, reduced portion sizes of snacks to 1oz, and all snacks are baked, No fried foods served at East, Bread & Pizza crust are now whole grain, Fresh fruit is offered, Milk sales have increased due in large part to four flavors being offered, whole grain cereals with reduced sugar are offered daily.

Middle School-Freshmen-High School: Basket lunches no longer offer French fries; instead, they offer a choice of tossed salad-mashed potatoes/gravy (no fat) and or Vegetable of the day. French fries are only offered as ala-carte on Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Numerous fresh fruit choices are offered daily, as well as 100% fruit juices, all snacks are now smaller portion sizes (1oz), most are baked snacks, or reduced fat. Water sales have increased dramatically since last spring when flavored (o calories) was introduced. A daily salad “Lunch of the Day” option, which includes a large cheese salad/w-milk & fruit, is offered for the same price as a regular school lunch. Other deluxe salad options such as chef, tuna, chicken, and fruit salad/w-cottage cheese is now offered for $3.00. All pizza crust and bread is now multi-grain. Other improvements: We received a $9,000 grant from the American Dairy Council to promote milk in schools. We now offer four flavors of milk, as well as purchasing a new milk vending machine for the High School.
