Teachers of the Year 2007-2008
JIM YATES AND LINDA NAPIER
For the first time, the Teacher of the Year in the Fairfield City School District is not an individual teacher, but a teaching team.
.
Linda Napier and Jim Yates were named Teacher of the Year for the 2007-08 school year during the district’s Opening Day meeting in August. Announcing the award at the meeting is a long tradition in the district. The meeting is the only occasion each year when the nearly 700 teachers in the district are all together.
Napier and Yates have been a teaching team for 17 years. They teach students with multiple handicaps. They’re based in Fairfield Intermediate School.
At the meeting, Superintendent Cathy Milligan read some of the statements from the nominations Napier and Yates had received:
“Their respect and passion for the kids is incredible.”
“You haven’t seen differentiation until you see these two do it.”
“They are the perfect example of where one plus one is much more than two.”
“They bring in students from the rest of the building to work with their kids. They have actually created careers….some of those students they brought into their classroom are now adults who went on to be teachers of disabled students.”
“They are in touch with every student’s family, every day, often two times per day.”
“Just walking into their room, you can feel the warmth.”
“They are so eager to provide a multitude of experiences for their kids. They are always pushing to have their kids included. In fact, they actually make every effort to showcase them.”
“They have loved and cared for their students unceasingly for years, in a setting which would have quickly burned most of us out.”
“Jim and Linda have worked together, without much public acclaim, for 17 years,” said Milligan. “I am so happy they will finally get the recognition of which they are so deserving. But I also know it’s not why they do it…they do it for the kids, not for themselves.”
