Band - Students in band participate
in concert band and are also given a choice of performing
in Jazz Ensemble or the Freshman Symphonic Winds. The main
focus of the class is concert band where students continue
to develop their performance skills and knowledge of the
ten elements of music. The concentration of study is on standard
band repertoire. Freshman Jazz Ensemble performs music from
the jazz idiom. Freshman Symphonic Winds perform standard
concert music as well as popular and show music. Students
are eligible to participate in the freshman band class upon
successful completion of eighth grade band or by successful
audition. Requirements of this class include attendance at
evening concerts and the purchase of theory and chorale books.
Concerts are performed at both the Fairfield Performing Arts
Center and the Freshman Auditorium. Freshman may participate
in the High School Marching Band. This is an extra-curricular
group which requires attendance at summer prep camp and band
camp.
Chorus - This class meets as a 3 part ladies' chorus first
term, and as a mixed chorus second term. Emphasis is on
vocal development, and music reading skills through the
performance of a varied repertoire of music. Two to three
concerts are performed each term, with opportunities for
solos, small ensembles, and choreography when appropriate.
Orchestra - Members of this orchestra must have been enrolled
in Orchestra at the Middle School or have permission of
the director to participate. As the premier ensemble in
the string department, the FHS Orchestra performs a variety
of concerts as well as participating in major musical events
around Southwestern Ohio.
