The study of health begins in the primary grades and proceeds through grades 9 or 10. The goal of the health program is to develop student awareness of topics and practices related to health and wellness. These include nutrition, exercise, hygiene, the prevention and spread of disease, first aid, mental illness, substance abuse and addiction, and an understanding of the health care system. Beginning in grade 6, basic instruction in human sexuality is provided to students in same-gender classes. Age appropriate instruction in human sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases is available to students in grades 7, 8, and high school, with parental permission. Abstinence until marriage is an important emphasis in the study of human sexuality.
