The study of health begins in the primary grades and proceeds through grades 9 or 10. The goal of the health program is to develop student awareness of topics and practices related to health and wellness. These include nutrition, exercise, hygiene, the prevention and spread of disease, first aid, mental illness, substance abuse and addiction, and an understanding of the health care system. Beginning in grade 6, basic instruction in human sexuality is provided to students in same-gender classes. Age appropriate instruction in human sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases is available to students in grades 7, 8, and high school, with parental permission. Abstinence until marriage is an important emphasis in the study of human sexuality.

Pandemic Planning
The
Fairfield City School District actively participates
in local, county and state health and safety
associations, and within the past year has
helped county officials develop a response
plan to a possible pandemic
avian flu (bird flu) outbreak. In August 2006, the district sent a letter to
all parents regarding these preparations. It
includes tips parents can use to help families
minimize risk of exposure and keep pandemic
flu - as well
as other contagious illnesses - from spreading.
Dating Violence
Ohio Substitute House Bill 19 became effective March 29, 2010. The bill requires public schools to incorporate dating violence into their policies prohibiting harassment, intimidation or bullying. School districts now also include dating violence prevention education in the health curriculum in grades 7 through 12. For guidelines and resources for dating violence prevention, click here.
